Stephan Beban

Stephan Beban (also recorded as Stephen or Stephanus Beban) was a Dalmatian (Croatian) immigrant who settled on New Zealand's West Coast during the goldfields era and lived in the Goldsborough–Stafford district until his death in 1911.¹⁾ He left Dalmatia in the mid-nineteenth century, worked at sea and in Australia, and later moved to New Zealand during the West Coast gold rush.²⁾

Stephan was born around 1832 on the island of Zlarin off the Dalmatian coast, then within the Austrian Empire.³⁾

His parents are recorded as Rocco Beban and Catterina Azzalin. Family records identify eight siblings: Catterina, Rocco, Simeona, Giovanna, Joanna, Tommaso Giovanni, Ivan, and Simon Beban.⁴⁾

Local-history notes describe Stephan as working as a sailor in early life, serving on sailing ships and travelling widely before entering the gold rush world of the southern hemisphere.⁵⁾

Accounts associated with West Coast local history describe Stephan leaving Dalmatia in the 1850s and spending time in Victoria (Australia) during the gold rush period.⁶⁾ His movement through Australia fits a broader pattern in which miners and workers moved between rushes and colonies as new goldfields opened.

Stephan later migrated from Australia to New Zealand and is placed arriving on the West Coast via Hokitika during the main gold rush period.⁷⁾ By the late 1860s he was established in the Stafford–Goldsborough area.⁸⁾

Stephan spent the greater part of his adult life in the Goldsborough area near Stafford and Hokitika, a locality closely tied to West Coast alluvial gold mining and the supporting settlements that persisted after the initial rush.⁹⁾

Later recollections place him living in Goldsborough from the late 1860s until his death, making him a long-term resident spanning the district's transition from goldfield boom years into a stable pioneer community.¹⁰⁾

Stephan married Catherine McDonald in Hokitika on 17 December 1867.¹¹⁾

Stephan and Catherine had eleven children (nine sons and two daughters).¹²⁾

Stephan died on 16 May 1911 at Goldsborough.¹⁴⁾

Stephan's enduring legacy is as the founding ancestor of the Beban family line in New Zealand, established through his long-term settlement in the Goldsborough–Stafford district and the eleven children he and Catherine raised there.¹⁹⁾ His life also forms part of the wider story of Dalmatian migration through maritime work and the Australasian gold rushes into permanent settlement on the West Coast.²⁰⁾
