Rocco Beban

Rocco Beban (born 12 August 1809; died after 25 June 1849) was a nineteenth-century resident of Zlarin, an island settlement off the Dalmatian coast. He was the son of Giovanni Beban and Simona Pupa and was married first to Catterina Azzalin and later to Adriana Dean.¹⁾

Rocco was born at Zlarin on 12 August 1809. His parents were Giovanni Beban and Simona Pupa.²⁾ His father also appears in family records as Zuanne Beban, a Venetian form of the name Giovanni.

Rocco's first wife was Catterina Azzalin. The date of their marriage is not known. A parish entry from 1849 describes Rocco as Catterina's widower, establishing that she had died by that year.³⁾

Compiled family records attribute nine children to Rocco and Catterina: Stephan, Catterina, Rocco, Simeona, Giovanna, Joanna, Tommaso Giovanni, Ivan and Simon.⁴⁾ The entries for Giovanna and Joanna contain incompatible birth dates only five weeks apart in 1840, and their identities have not yet been resolved.

On 25 June 1849 Rocco married Adriana Dean, the widow of Giacomo Azzalin. The register describes both spouses as Roman Catholics resident at Zlarin. Adriana was born there on 4 September 1803.⁵⁾

Rocco's date of death is unknown. He was alive on 25 June 1849, when he married Adriana Dean. A death date of 25 June 1849 sometimes attributed to him is incompatible with the marriage record; the Zlarin death register assigns that date to Matteo Gargano, aged 44, and contains no corresponding entry for Rocco.⁶⁾
