Mary Dumbreck, later Mary Gibson (26 December 1846 – 22 July 1923), was a Scottish-born New Zealand member of the Gibson family. She was the wife of James Gibson and lived with her family on the West Coast.
Early life
Mary was born at Lanark, Scotland, on 26 December 1846. Family records identify her parents as John Dumbreck and Mary Wilson.1)
Marriage and family
Mary married James Gibson at St Nicholas Presbyterian Church in Lanark on 13 December 1867. They had five children: Adam, Mary Stevenson, Catherine, Margaret Stevenson, and James.2)
A family record states that Mary and James travelled from Scotland aboard the *Westland*, arriving at Port Chalmers on 21 April 1879. It records Mary as aged 32 at arrival.
Westport and death
Mary died at Westport on 22 July 1923. The family record names Orowaiti Middle Cemetery as her burial place, while the gravestone was located at Westport Cemetery. Whether the two names refer to the same burial ground is unclear.3)
